FYI, the picture you show under the comment about the San Gabriel Valley is not there: it is an alley in L.A. Chinatown, which is roughly 15 miles from the Monterey Park-Alhambra epicenter of Chinese gustatory delights.

Just a note to say that the book/catalogue 'Picturing China 1870-1950, Photographs from British Collections' by Robert Bickers, Catherine Ladds, Jamie Carstairs and Yee Wah Foo is available to buy from publishers (the University of Bristol, in England) for £10 (Ten pounds sterling) plus postage and packing. The eponymous exhibition is on at the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, UK, until 13 April 2008. Then 'Picturing China' moves to the Oriental Museum in Durham, UK (from 25 April to 30 August 2008).
