I had the good fortune, as editor in chief of EE Times, to travel on assignment to China extensively between 1998 and 2006 where I 'discovered' Zhongguancun and filed numerous news reports and stories for that newspaper's readers tracking China's emergence as a high-tech contender, including an initial report - "PC revolution sweeps China"- one of the very first dispatchs from that region, including photographs documenting the bustling street life in and around this vibrant tech zone. Years later I filed a footnote to my Zhongguancun coverage: "PC Alley swept into history's dustbin"; a lament to the passing of an era, and the beginning of another, for China's Silicon Valley. Both articles can be found by searching for these headlines on in the EE Times news archive. regrettably, EE Times closed its China bureau many years ago, but continues to run occassional reports from the region from its sister publication EE Times China, which I helped launch in 2000, on the eve of the dotcom collapse. Those interested in additional perspectives on "the next Silicon Valley" may be interested in the blog I began earlier this year, a pre-cursor to a more ambitious, independent, project, a pan-regional guide of the top high-tech zones of the world. In an earlier post this week http://thenextsiliconvalley.blogspot.com] I examined a recent report on the Xi'an High Tech Industrial Development Zone (HTDZ) and commented on the shortsighedness of some observers who believe the Silicon Valley experience cannot be replicated anywhere but along California'a Highway 101. The China Beat is a great blog, and I commend you for your excellent work. RKWRichard Wallacehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01190792671247025995noreply@blogger.com
