I think it's a kind of re-imagining of modern Taiwanese identity that makes people feel it's ok to be Taiwanese, and is based on shared social experience (real or imaginary) and not political ideology. However I don't think this was deliberate on the filmmakers part.

Also of note: the director of Cape No. 7, Wei Desheng, is trying to gather funding for a film about the Wushe Incident. He has already completed a 5 minute trailer which can be seen here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1wcMvBcqW0Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17945430704057679068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4050554817776641945.post-61791181758993278902009-01-17T14:03:00.000-08:002009-01-17T14:03:00.000-08:00It's a fine movie, though not great. The begining of the movie is a bit tardy. The ship and ocean are so fake. There is actually not much politically sensitive stuff in it, contrary to all the talk I've heard, which made me wonder if all the talk about political sensitiveness of the movie was really produced to promote the movie.PoliticallyIncorrecthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11989578852229832069noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4050554817776641945.post-58803637287791272232009-01-17T05:49:00.000-08:002009-01-17T05:49:00.000-08:00I can tell you that everybody in Southern Fujian, ...I can tell you that everybody in Southern Fujian, particularly in Quanzhou, has already seen it and were talking about it quite a bit in late 2008.davesgonechinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13103057216696593699noreply@blogger.com
