I am and Australian soon to spend a month in China (October 09). My mother was born in Shanghai in 1918 to an Australian mother and English father who met in China about 1914. Unfortunately my grandfather died in Shanghai at only 36 years of age, leaving my grandmother with 3 small children. She returned to Australia with her children, heartbroken. My trip to China is a bit of a pilgrimage...my grandfather is buried there. When I found Distant Land, I immediately thought that this book would somehow reflect my own story. At first I was disappointed to learn it was a novel, but having read it, I now realise that it IS my story - a story of a tie to China and of an ancestor's love for an exotic country. I loved the book and it will be in my mind as I travel through China. Thanks. Noela Dillon.noddygirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02924378074858626259noreply@blogger.com
